Keep Windows Updated

Weekly Updating and Scanning

One of the most important things you can do to keep your computer clean and your internet connection safe from being shut off is to constantly keep your computer up to date. It is best to do this at least once a week so that new viruses and things don't have that much of a chance of affecting you.

There are three primary items that need to be updated on a regular basis; the operating system, the virus scanner, and the spyware scanner. This page will walk you through updating Windows XP and Vista.

Updating Windows

Normally Windows Updates are only release on the second Tuesday of every month. However, they have been known to release them on other days so it is still a good idea to check once a week when you do the virus updates. To do this:

Click to go to the Windows Update site.

Click on the "Express" button.

Keep your computer up to date

After clicking on the button you will see a progress bar. Sometimes this can take a few minutes so don't worry if you end up waiting a little.

Checking for latest updates

When it is done scanning your computer, if there are any updates you will be given a list of what there is. Just click the "Install Updates" button.

Review and install updates

Once the installation is done, depending on the updates that were installed, you will either have to reboot the computer or just close the installer. Either way, just go ahead and click the button and you will have successfully updates Windows XP/2000.
